Gen 3 = thermoformed polypropylene honeycomb core, usually with foam injected around the perimeter. Gen 4 = the honeycomb is gone, replaced by a full foam core. Gen 3 peaks on day one and slowly dies of core crush; Gen 4 needs a break-in, then holds its performance far longer with a bigger sweet spot. Neither is objectively “better” — but only one of them is still great in month six.

Every difference below comes from one design decision: what fills the space between the two carbon faces.

The other clock: grit wear
Core generation answers “how long does the paddle stay solid.” It says nothing about how long it stays grippy — and those are two separate clocks running on the same paddle. A Gen 4 core with a cheap surface still goes slick; a Gen 3 core with an endurance grit keeps biting long after its core starts to fade.
John Kew’s standardized wear protocol makes the surface half measurable: clamp the paddle at 30°, fire 100 shots at 70 mph into a one-inch square, then re-measure spin with a high-speed camera under identical conditions.
Every traditional raw-carbon or spray-grit face tested lost ≈20% or more of its spin — the point where most players start shopping for a replacement. Tier-1 durable grits measured zero loss. Surface-roughness testing tells the same story: 97% grit retention versus 81%.
So there are two questions, not one: what’s the core (how long it stays solid), and what’s the surface (how long it stays grippy). The best-value paddles answer both — that’s why my own fleet leans toward Gen 4 cores with endurance grit, and why a “Gen 4” badge alone doesn’t guarantee the paddle will still be spinning in month six.
A honeycomb core is an engineered cellular structure: enormously stiff per gram, which is exactly why aerospace uses it — but its stiffness depends on the cell walls staying straight. Every impact micro-buckles those walls. Once a cell folds, it never unfolds, and the local stiffness drops permanently: that's a dead spot. Foam is a stochastic cellular solid — millions of tiny bubbles instead of engineered columns — so there's no single wall whose failure collapses a region. It trades peak stiffness-per-gram for graceful degradation, which is the same trade aerospace makes between a stringer-stiffened panel and a syntactic-foam core.
Buying with your own money and playing a lot? Gen 4. The sweet spot is bigger today and it will still be a good paddle in month six. Choose Gen 3 if you specifically love that connected, springy feedback and you accept replacing the paddle sooner. Neither answer is wrong — one is just more expensive per year.

Part 2 — What the pros actually choose
“Most pros still play Gen 3” gets repeated constantly — and it’s true. But it’s usually offered as evidence that Gen 3 is better. That only follows if the pros are choosing freely. So I checked: of the pros at the top of the PPA rankings, how many could actually pick a Gen 4 paddle if they wanted one?
The problem: a sponsored pro isn’t a free shopper
Three things can remove the choice before preference ever enters the picture:
- The sponsor doesn’t make one. If your brand has no full-foam paddle in its catalog, you play Gen 3 — full stop.
- The paddle is their signature model. A player whose name is on the paddle isn’t evaluating alternatives; they’re selling that one.
- The paddle is banned or unavailable. Rarer, but it happened this season — more on that below.
So I built the choice set: start from pros with a verified current paddle, then strip out everyone who never had a decision to make. What’s left is the only group whose paddle actually expresses a preference.
Step 1 — Who sponsors the top of the game
Across 240 medals at ten PPA events between January and May 2026, 32.5% were won with a JOOLA paddle — nearly a third of the podium, one brand. That single fact drives most of what follows.
Every pink brand above is a brand with no full-foam paddle in its catalog. JOOLA’s CEO has said so on the record: “We don’t feel at this point that foam cores are that innovative.”
Step 2 — Strip out everyone who had no decision
More than half of the pros with a verified paddle — 19 of 33 — are sponsored by a brand that doesn’t sell a Gen 4 paddle at all. Twelve of those nineteen are JOOLA.
Step 3 — And when they can choose?
Same players, same season. The moment the contract stops deciding, the split flips toward foam.
The whole study on one card
The whole analysis in one frame — spring 2026 snapshot. Share it, argue with it, and tell me what I got wrong courtside.
“The pros play Gen 3” is mostly a sentence about sponsorship, not about paddles. A third of the top of the game plays for one brand that has chosen not to build a foam core. Strip out the players who were never offered the choice, and roughly three out of four take Gen 4 — which lines up with what the lab data says about sweet spot and durability. The elite Gen 3 holdouts are real and they are excellent players. They’re just not the majority once you control for who was allowed to decide.
Universe: pros appearing in The Kitchen’s dated paddle trackers (21 May and 3 Apr 2026), cross-checked against the official PPA top-30 rankings for all four divisions (retrieved 30 Jul 2026 from PPA’s own ranking API). Gen classification is by core construction — full-foam = Gen 4; polypropylene honeycomb, including versions with foam perimeters or foam edge walls = Gen 3.
Limitations, stated plainly: (1) Pro paddle usage has a shelf life of weeks — this is a spring-2026 snapshot, and I found one widely-cited “database” still listing a player on a sponsor she left in January. (2) Three players were dropped because Proton paddles were banned from sanctioned pro play on 30 March 2026. (3) Two brands’ core tech I could not verify at all. (4) PIKKL, Adidas and Facolos are classified “no Gen 4 found” on flagship specs rather than an exhaustive catalog audit — medium confidence. (5) n=11 is a small choice set; it is a census of who genuinely had the option, not a statistical sample. Treat the direction as solid and the exact percentage as soft.
