Why paddles lose their spin — and how to make yours last.

Grit is a wear item. What the lab data says about spin decay, how to slow it down, and how to test your own paddle tonight.

Mission brief

Spin comes from the gritty texture on the paddle face — and on most paddles, that texture is a wear item. Standard raw-carbon faces lose around 20% of their spin (a 300–400 RPM drop) in standardized wear testing; endurance-grit surfaces measure near zero loss. If you buy your own paddles, grit durability matters more than launch-day spin numbers.

What's actually wearing out

"Raw carbon" faces get their bite from a peel-ply epoxy micro-texture created during molding. It was never designed for tens of thousands of ball impacts: the microscopic peaks smooth out, the ball slides instead of gripping, and your topspin quietly shrinks. Most players notice somewhere between 30–50 hours of play — usually as balls that used to dip starting to sail.

Purpose-built endurance grits (Honolulu's Blue Endurance, 11SIX24's HexGrit, Spartus' PermaGrit) are engineered textures that survive the same wear test with zero measured spin loss. That's the single biggest reason three paddles in my fleet wear the Aerospace Grade badge — and why marketing claims deserve skepticism: at least one "durable grit" coating faded like standard raw carbon when independently tested.

The rocket science

Spin is tangential friction doing work during a contact that lasts only a few milliseconds. The ball grips the texture peaks, the paddle's brushing motion applies a tangential impulse, and RPM is the result. Friction coefficient drops as peak height wears down — less tangential impulse in the same contact time, fewer RPM. Cleaning restores friction lost to residue filling the texture; nothing restores friction lost to the texture itself being gone. It's the difference between washing a tire and re-treading it.

Practical takeaway

Buying with your own money? Prioritize endurance grit (see the Grit Life grades on the fleet page). Clean weekly, corner-test monthly, and when the center goes glassy, that's your paddle telling you the truth marketing wouldn't.
